About Word Guess — Daily 5-Letter Word Game
Word Guess is a free daily 5-letter word game: you get six tries to find a hidden five-letter word, and after every guess the tiles change color to show how close you are. It takes a minute or two to play, but working out the answer from a handful of colored clues is wonderfully satisfying.
Every day there’s a new Daily word — the same one for every player — so you can compare results with friends and share a spoiler-free emoji grid of your game. Can’t wait until tomorrow? Switch to Unlimited and keep playing fresh five-letter words back to back for as long as you like, with your own streak and stats for each mode.
If you’ve played Wordle, you already know the idea. Our version adds unlimited practice rounds, a hard mode for experts, a color-blind friendly palette and detailed statistics — all free, with no download or sign-up, on any phone, tablet or computer.
How to play Word Guess
- 1
Type your first guess
Enter any real five-letter word and press Enter. A good opener uses five different letters, including common vowels and consonants — words like CRANE, SLATE or TRACE are popular choices.
- 2
Read the colors
Each tile flips to reveal a color. Green means the right letter in the right spot. Yellow means the letter is in the word but belongs somewhere else. Gray means the letter doesn’t appear in the answer at all. The on-screen keyboard keeps track of every letter for you.
- 3
Narrow it down
Use what you’ve learned in the next guess: keep your green letters in place, move your yellow letters to new positions and avoid gray letters. Each guess should rule out as many possible answers as it can.
- 4
Solve it in six
Find the word within six guesses to win and extend your streak. Miss it and the answer is revealed — then come back tomorrow for a new Daily word, or jump straight into Unlimited for another round.

Word Guess tips and strategy
Open with five different letters
Your first guess is about gathering information, not getting lucky. Five distinct letters — ideally two vowels plus common consonants like R, S, T, L and N — test the most ground in one go.
Use a second word to cover new letters
If your opener comes back mostly gray, a second guess with five completely new letters (for example CRANE then MOIST) often reveals more than trying to solve right away.
Remember letters can repeat
Answers like APPLE, SHEEP or LEVEL contain double letters. If you’re stuck with only a few possibilities left and nothing fits, try repeating a letter you’ve already found.
Think about letter positions
Some letters love certain spots: S often starts words, E and Y often end them, and H frequently follows C, S, T or W. When a yellow letter could go in several places, try it where it’s most common.
Watch out for word traps
Patterns like _IGHT or _ATCH can have many possible first letters. Instead of guessing them one at a time, play a word that tests several of those candidate letters at once.
Count your remaining guesses
With two or three guesses left, stop exploring and start solving — pick the most likely word that fits every clue. With four or more left, a clever information-gathering guess is often worth it.
Try hard mode once you’re confident
Hard mode forces you to reuse every green and yellow clue in later guesses. It removes the safety net of “scouting” words and is a great way to sharpen your deduction.
Daily vs. Unlimited
- Daily: one hidden word per day, the same for everyone. The puzzle changes at midnight in your local time zone. You get one attempt, and your result feeds a day streak, your guess distribution and a shareable emoji grid.
- Unlimited: a brand-new random word every round, as many times as you like. It has its own win percentage, streak and distribution, so practice games never affect your daily record. Skipping a word after you’ve started guessing counts as a miss, so your Unlimited streak stays honest.
Your progress is saved automatically on your device — close the page halfway through a game and your guesses will be waiting when you return.
How the colors work with double letters
Repeated letters are scored carefully. Exact matches turn green first. Then a letter can only turn yellow as many times as it still appears in the answer. So if the answer is CREPE and you guess EERIE, the final E is green, one of the other E’s is yellow, and the extra E is gray — telling you the word has exactly two E’s.
The on-screen keyboard always shows the best color you’ve found for each letter, so a key that has ever been green stays green.
Our word list
The answers come from a hand-curated list of about 1,900 familiar five-letter words. We removed plurals, simple past tenses like BAKED, obscure words and anything offensive, so every answer is a word you’ll recognize. Your guesses can be drawn from a much bigger dictionary of valid words, which gives you plenty of freedom for clever scouting guesses.

Frequently asked questions
Is Word Guess free to play?
Yes. Word Guess is completely free, with no download, account or sign-up needed. It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers.
Can I play more than one word a day?
Yes. The Daily word is limited to one game per day so everyone plays the same puzzle, but Unlimited mode gives you a new random five-letter word every round — play as many as you like.
When does the daily word change?
A new Daily word arrives at midnight in your local time zone. After you finish today’s game, a countdown shows exactly how long until the next one.
What does hard mode do?
In hard mode, any letter revealed as green must stay in the same spot, and any yellow letter must be used somewhere in your next guesses. You can only switch hard mode on or off before your first guess of a round.
What do the colors mean?
Green means the letter is correct and in the right position. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in a different position. Gray means the letter isn’t in the word. Turn on high-contrast colors in Settings to use orange and blue instead of green and yellow.
How do I share my result without spoilers?
When you finish the Daily word, tap Share to copy an emoji grid of your colored tiles. It shows how your game went without revealing any letters, so friends can still play.
Why was my guess rejected?
Guesses must be real five-letter words from our dictionary. “Not in word list” means we don’t recognize the word. In hard mode, you’ll also see a message if your guess doesn’t use a clue you’ve already revealed.
